2-3 September

The theme of this meeting is 'muscle progenitors, stem cells and post-natal growth' and focuses on the cells and signalling mechanisms that regulate muscle development in pre- and post-natal life. The influence of key genes and signalling pathways that underlie these processes will be addressed. The approach is to gain an overview of the origins of skeletal muscle during embryonic development, hypertrophy during post-natal growth, maintenance in adulthood and demise in old age. Also addressed will be how the basic understanding of muscle biology is being applied in clinical, sport and agricultural settings. Pertinent examples are the effect of exercise on hypertrophy, mechanisms underlying the loss of muscle mass during ageing and disease and the influence and use of key genes on muscle development in livestock.

Keynote speakers will address the regulation of commitment to lineage, proliferation, differentiation, signal transduction, protein synthesis and the consequences of disruption on these processes on the development and physical properties of skeletal muscle.
